Follow-up on NRA post – They got something right
Yes, the NRA said something sensible today, though not enough to fill me with hope. When a politician I prefer not to name said that the solution to the Orlando tragedy was to arm the nightclub crowd so the bullets would be flying in both directions, the organization countered with NO WAY.
NRA lobbyist Chris Cox told ABC’s This Week: “No one thinks that people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying firearms. That defies common sense. It also defies the law. It’s not what we’re talking about here.”
If you shouldn’t drive a car when drunk – which can turn your vehicle into a two-ton deadly weapon – then you shouldn’t do anything else that is liable to kill someone. Alcohol, like all other mind-altering drugs, slows your reflexes and impairs your judgment. People can do some incredibly dumb things while under the influence, including start fights that get out of control. If that happens, then the only thing you want flying are their fists.
In my book, tavern owner Jordie Bolton knew that. All patrons at the Brown Bull were required to drop off their weaponry in an adjoining room before being served.
And this is not mere fiction. There is plenty of evidence that gun control was the accepted norm in the so-called Wild West, that thirsty cowmen had to check in their hardware at the marshal’s office before getting down to some serious drinking.
And that was when they had six-shooters instead of assault rifles.
